English from a young age

The special thing about Saint Denis is how we aim to introduce the English language from a very young age.

Teachers give learning objectives to their pupils in English starting from the very first day as a way of immersing your little ones in the language from the start. Lesson activities are also carried out in English to develop childrens’ listening and speaking skills, both in day-to-day as well as more specific contexts: this includes greeting them at their morning arrival to school, teacher instructions during lessons, learning the names of the objects and people around them, asking and replying to questions, singing songs and reciting poems.

Along with the more verbal side of learning, the school also emphasises the use of actions and images. This helps children  to memorize sounds and words and associate them to their meaning within day-to-day contexts, allowing them to comprehend and develop the new language without the interference of Italian.

Teachers make use of a multitude of teaching, recreational and multimedia materials in order to encourage learning, from flashcards to action-packed vocabulary games, songs and rhymes, in order to improve their ‘ear’ and get used to the sound of a new language.

By becoming familiar with English through play, the child is able to learn naturally and spontaneously.

All morning lesson activities throughout the nursery three-year program, including lunchtime, are held in English by a native-speaking teacher (for a total of 20 hours a week). The afternoon activities are held in Italian by trained and qualified teachers.
